Kathmandu, 4 November: The long-awaited tripartite talks between the UK and the Government of Nepal (G2G) and the Gorkha representatives have started on the ex- British Gurkha issue. According to ex- Gurkhas, the first round of talks, which lasted for about an hour on Thursday morning at the British Ministry of Defense in London, was positive. However, the main demand of ex-Gurkhas has been included in the agenda such as pension, compensation and service facilities similar to British soldiers.
The Gorkhas have said that Ambassador Gyan Chandra Acharya, who represented the Nepal government in the talks, strongly presented the Gorkha ‘agenda’. Minister of State for Defense and Veterans on behalf of the UK, Andrew Morrison emphasized only on welfare, the ambassador took the position that the discussion should focus on equal pension.
Peaceful demonstration
While the government representatives were holding talks, the ex-Gurkhas staged a peaceful protest at Trafalgar Square to exert pressure on the British government The demonstration was called by the Gorkha Satyagraha Samyukta Sangharsh Samiti, GESO and NRNA UK in which hundreds of ex-Gurkhas participated, according to GESO.
