Tihar festival begins

Kathmandu, 23 October: Following the lunar calendar, the Tihar festival started on Saturday evening by lighting candles welcoming and pleasing Yemaraj, the envoy of death. It is believed that Yemaraj will stay on the earth for five days, also known as Yema Panchak. 

The first day of the Tihar starts with Dhan Terash, Kag Tihar, however, this year, Dhanteras, Kag Tihar (crow festival) and also Dhanwantari (inventor of Ayurveda medicine) anniversary are being observed today (Sunday).

On the second day of the Tihar festival, Kukur Pooja (dog festival is observed. Due to the lunar location this year, the dog festival and Laxmipooja are being observed on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Newar community observes Maha Pooja as Nepal New Year on Wednesday. New Year 1143 is going to start on Wednesday, 26 October this year. The next day, Thursday is being observed as the Bhai Tika (brothers’ festival).

Along with Bhai Pooja, the Tihar festival ends and the Chhat festival will starts.
