Flouting SC’s decision govt makes transitional law to grant amnesty

Kathmandu, 17 July: In defiance of the Supreme Court’s ruling that amnesty cannot be granted in cases of serious human rights violations during the armed conflict, the government has registered a draft of a new law in parliament to end transitional justice that will benefit the Maoists.

In the bill to amend the Commission for Inquiry, Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Act 2071, which was registered by the government in the Parliament on Friday, the Supreme Court’s decision not to grant amnesty in cases of serious human rights violations and the commitments made several times with the international community, any violation of international human rights or humanitarian law. A provision has been made to grant amnesty for inhuman acts.
