Kathmandu, 10 July: Leading an eight-member delegation Liu Jianchao, newly appointed Head of the International Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, is arriving in Kathmandu today.
He is visiting Nepal for the first time since taking over the Foreign Department after Nepal publicly announced that it was not joining the US State Partnership Programme. He is visiting Nepal as it prepares for a general elections and discusses China’s strategy to show solidarity with the major communist parties and improve relations with the ruling Congress.
The visit from the northern neighbour has been taken as meaningful as the Chinese side had played a crusial role in bringing the CPN-UML and the CPN Maoists together in the last parliamentary elections and then uniting the communist forces.
Despite the support and goodwill of the Chinese side, the UML and the Maoists split following the Supreme Court ruling. The communist-led government that China wanted in Nepal fell. China has been constantly emphasizing the need for communists to unite in Nepal.
China has been attaching priority to Nepal’s communist parties, it has also shown interest in expanding ties with the Nepali Congress. Last week Liu held virtual talks with Nepali Congress leader Narayan Khadka. Earlier he had video conversation with KP Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal. Liu is scheduled to meet Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN- UML, CPN (US), CPN (MC) leaders and President Bidyadevi Bhandari, according to reports.
