The Nepalese people have given the ruling Nepali Congress a piece of their mind by refusing to entrust it with a fresh mandate in the mid-term general elections where 90 seats have so far been declared as of 5 PM yesterday. Despite having a clear advantage of incumbency, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has virtually no hope of gaining 103 seats required to from the government, not to talk of his earlier claim of securing two-thirds majority and not even winning his revised “comfortable majority”. Trends at the time of this writing clearly indicate that the main opposition the CPN (UML) will turn out to be the largest single party. But it is still not clear as yet whether the UML will be able to secure a simple majority or a coalition will be necessary.
