Kathmandu, 6 December: Following the Supreme Court’s interim verdict today, the Nijgadh International Airport project is going to be delayed. Single bench of SC justice Tankabahadur Moktan has given the verdict to the government to stop all the procedures related to construction of the Nijgadh International Airport for the time being and also to stop cut down of the trees.
Responding a petition claiming that cut down of millions of number of trees would impact on ecology and livelihood, Moktan has ordered to stop the construction of the proposed second international airport.
As the Tribhuvan International Airport has already become congested, the government is in hurry to construct international standard airport at Nijgadh with the plan of developing the Airport as the hub for the tourist flow in South Asia. Due to the heavy air traffic the TIA is facing, aircraft bound to TIA and taking off from the TIA are compelled to keep on hold for hours in the sky as well as at the TIA.
