India is positive to allow Nepal export its power to Bangladesh by using the Indian territory.
Nepal has been mulling over exporting 9000 MW power to Nepal, but for that Nepal has to use the Indian soil.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry of India has agreed to call a tripartite meeting to finalise the issue.
An energy secretary level meeting of Nepal and India held in Bangalore last agreed to call the tripartite meeting in three months.
Nepali side was led by secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Water Resource and Irrigation Dinesh Kumar Ghimire while the Indian team was led by secretary S.C; Garga.
As Nepal is going to have surplus power by June next year, it has been searching market to sell the power.
Meanwhile, Nepal and India agreed to invest jointly for the Butwal and Gorkhapur 400KV extension lines.
The meeting also agreed to connect Nepal’s power in the energy banking and Day Ahead Market.
“The meeting is expected to fix transmission modalities and commercial terms for use of the Indian grid, paving the way for direct power trade between Nepal and Bangladesh through India,” said Dinesh Ghimire, secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation.
“We have proposed to trade electricity with Bangladesh in a cost-effective way by paying surcharges for using Indian transmission lines as fixed by Indian regulations rather than transacting power through an Indian commercial entity acting as an intermediary between Nepal and Bangladesh.”
