Kathmandu, 19 October: After resignation of speaker Krishnabahadur Mahara the Federal Parliament has to elect new speaker. The Nepal Communist Party has already started consultation on the candidate to the post of the speaker.
Former Maoist Center leaders are claiming for electing new speaker from the former Maoist Center as Mahara was from this fiction before the merger.
Earlier, when UML and Maoist Center were different parties, speaker and vice speaker were elected from different political parties. According to the Constitution, both the posts cannot be occupied by one party. Also, gender should be different.
Deputy Speaker Shivamaya Tumbahamphe was representing UML at that time. Now, after the merger, either Tumbahamphe should tender resignation to pave the way for NCP to elect new speaker from the party, otherwise, NCP cannot claim the speaker’s post.
However, NCP doesn’t want to lose such an influential constitutional position and it is believed that Tumbahamphe would tender resignation.
From former Maoist faction in NCP, Dev Gurung, Pampha Bhushal, Agni Sapkota’s names are being named to the post of speaker.
Meanwhile, NC has also claimed the post of speaker respecting the spirit of the constitution. However, it seems impossible as NCP doesn’t want to lose this post.
