NC to block Media Council Bill

By Our Reporter
Former Prime Minister and Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that his party would not allow the government to table the proposed Media Council Bill, which was introduced by the government with an intention of curtailing press freedom.
Speaking at a function in Bhairahawa on Sunday, Deuba warned that the opposition party, the Nepali Congress, would obstruct the parliament process if the government tabled the bill, adding that free press was the guarding force of the Republic.
Deuba also said the government was becoming authoritarian. However, he rejected his involvement in the wide-body aircraft scam.
“I have already made it clear in the parliament and the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority, (CIAA) should conclude the issue after investigating it minutely.
Stating that the nation suffered big losses in the Baluwatar land case and the wide body aircraft scam, Deuba said that the CIAA must investigate into the cases and made public the names of wrong-doers.
“I do not have any involvement in the wide body aircraft and the Baluwatar land scam,” repeated Deuba, adding, “I am ready to face any action if I am found wrong in the cases.”
