Kathmandu, 1 May: The arrogance of two-third majority of the Khagda Prasad Oli led government has blatantly attempted to curtail the rights of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), a constitutional human rights watchdog.
The mainstream media outlets of today have expressed grave concern over have the NHRC bill registered at the federal parliament that attempts to make the Commission a teeth-less tiger by curtailing its rights.
The commission officials including its chair, the former Chief Justice Anoop Raj Sharma has urged the government to withdraw the bill. On the contrary, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Bhanu Bhakta Dhakal, however, says the government did not bring the bill to withdraw; and hopes it will get endorsed after incorporating feedback from the lawmakers and concerned parliamentary committees.
The news reports state that the image of Nepal will be tarnished in the international arena if the government fails to provide sufficient rights and responsibilities to the Commission as international documents have imagined an independent and autonomous human rights body in every country.
