    Kathmandu, June 18: United Traders Syndicate Pvt. Ltd. (UTS), the official distributor of Toyota vehicles for Nepal, is organizing “Experience Toyota” at its Toyota showroom in Anandnagar, Dhumbarahi from June 19 to 21.

    Tourists stuck in Lukla due to bad weather

    Kathmandu, June 18: Aircraft are unable to fly to Lukla due to the bad weather for the past ten days causing tourists stuck there.

    The Tenjing Hilary Airport in Lukla is the busiest as this is the airport close to the Sagarmatha (Everest) Base Camp. Tourists use this airport for trekking to the Khumbu Area.

    Due to very low visibility and heavy fug, aeroplanes and helicopters are unable to fly to Lukla, from which, tourists visiting in the area are stuck there.

    Chinese leader Bater calls on PM Dahal

    Kathmandu, June 17: Bater, Vice President of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) met with Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Sunday. The meeting was an intensification of continued mutual consultation between the two sides to strengthen bilateral political and economic ties.

    China’s BRI has been set to be the practical international cooperation vehicle to strengthen these ties which are better secured and efficient.  The two sides focus on five-connectivity of BRI that start with the adjoining border areas.

    PM Dahal thanked China for bringing 14 Nepal-China entry points into operation for governance, people-to-people, trade, infrastructure and security connectivity.

    Sekhar Koirala opines to change present election system

    Kathmandu, June 15: Nepali Congress’ senior leader Dr Sekhar Koirala has opined for a change in the present election system for political stability and economic development.

    Addressing a press conference organized by the Nepal Press Union, Dhanusha, in Janakpur, Koirala remarked that the present election system cannot allow the development of the nation, and also cannot give political stability.

    “Without political stability, development is not possible and under the present system, there is no chance to bag a majority by one single political party,” Koirala said.

    Therefore, the present political system has to be changed, Koirala remarked.

    Accordingly, Koirala opined that criminalization in politics has inclined, which is dangerous.

    “When political leaders, businessmen and bureaucrats stand together, such a situation will develop,” Koirala said.

    He illustrated that the problem of loan sharks and cooperatives is the result of the criminalization of politics.

    Kathmandu, June 15: On 14 June, Tribhuvan University (TU) and Handong Global University (HGU) of the Republic of Korea commemorated the significant milestone of the 10th anniversary of their collaborative “MBA Global Leadership and Management” program. Prof.

    Dr. Dev Raj Adhikari, Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Dipak Kaphle, Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Park Tae-Young, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Nepal, Prof. Dr. Keshar Jung Baral, Vice Chancellor of TU, and Prof. Dr. Dosoung Choi, President of HGU, were present in the ceremony.

    Under the auspices of the UNESCO UNITWIN program, initiated with the support of the Ministries of Education of the two nations, this joint two-year MBA curriculum has aimed at nurturing talent with a multidisciplinary approach, fostering creative and innovative solutions to Nepal’s societal issues. Graduates of the program have gone on to become leaders in various fields, contributing significantly to Nepal’s sustainable development, particularly through ventures in social entrepreneurship. The slogan of the program, “Social Creatinnovation for the Sustainable Future of Nepal,” encapsulates its ethos of fostering innovation for societal progress.

    During the ceremony, UGC Chairman Dr. Adhikari stated that the TU MBA GLM program empowers students to innovate and launch startups, aligning with job market demands. He also highlighted that collaborations with foreign universities help internationalize Nepal’s higher education. Additionally, the attending Secretary, Kaphle, stressed that the joint program has been instrumental in fostering innovative leadership and addressing societal challenges in Nepal, conveying appreciation for Korea’s invaluable support in strengthening education capabilities in Nepal.

    The 10th-anniversary celebration holds particular significance as it coincides with the 50th year of diplomatic relations between Korea and Nepal. Ambassador Park, in his address, congratulated the program on its milestone achievement and the enduring partnership between the two universities. Furthermore, he highlighted the Korean government’s commitment to the development of Nepal’s education and vocational training sector. He affirmed that such initiatives align with Korea’s enduring support of Nepal as a steadfast development partner.

    Having designated Nepal as a “Priority Cooperation Country” for 15 consecutive years in development cooperation, the Korean government has consistently provided diverse assistance in key areas, including education and vocational training, health, agriculture, rural development, and energy.

    Education and vocational training are among Korea’s top prioritized sectors in Nepal. The Korean government has provided substantial support to Nepal, including USD 200.01 million allocated through KOICA since 1991. Besides this, the Korean government has supported talented individuals from Nepal through the Global Korea Scholarship program, providing scholarships for degree programs. Additionally, through the Leading University Project for International Cooperation, Korean universities share their academic systems and curriculums with Nepalese universities, including Tribhuvan University and Kathmandu University, contributing to the enhancement of higher education capacity.

    As this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Korea and Nepal, the Korean government has commemorated this milestone with various projects and programs. These initiatives aim to further expand bilateral cooperation across diverse fields between the two nations.

    The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notice on Friday and informed that it has been decided to give a public holiday on Monday, June 17. The government has been giving a public holiday every year during Barak Eid.

    Food transportation from Kerung to Simkot starts

    Kathmandu, June 14: The food grain transportation from Kathmandu to Hilsa to Simkot via Kerung pass in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China through Rasuwagadhi has started.

    Two days ago, the shipment of the food grain from Kathmandu started from Kerung to the Hilsa border with the transportation subsidy of Food Management and Trade Company Limited.

    Navin Acharya of the Limited’s Humla Branch said that the transportation of food grains to Hilsa via Chinese territory has started from Rasuwagadhi via Kerung pass.

    The Food Management Ltd. has been transporting food grains for Humla through this route, there was a quota of 5,000 quintals of food grains in this financial year. He said that earlier the road was blocked due to snowfall and now the road has also been opened and the transportation of food has started after the documents were arranged from the Chinese Embassy.

    He said that it will take five days to deliver goods to Hilsa through the Chinese route from the Kerung border, and from Hilsa the transportation will be done to Namkha Rural Municipality center Yalwang and Simkot using Nepali transport.

    SAARC SG calls on Sri Lankan President  

    Kathmandu, June 13: Secretary General of SAARC, Ambassador Golam Sarwar, paid a courtesy call on Ranil Wickremesinghe, President of Sri Lanka, at the President’s Office in Colombo on June 12. As part of his ongoing visit to the member states, the SAARC SG is currently on an introductory consultations visit to Sri Lanka.

    President Wickremesinghe welcomed Ambassador Sarwar and congratulated him on assuming charge as the fifteenth Secretary General of SAARC.

    Ambassador Sarwar expressed appreciation for Sri Lankan support of the SAARC process since its establishment in December 1985. Furthermore, he conveyed confidence in receiving continued support and guidance from Sri Lanka to further strengthen the SAARC process. The SG apprised the President about the current activities of SAARC and its challenges and sought Sri Lanka’s support in re-energising the SAARC process. In briefing on the recent development of holding the Governing Board Meetings of all the SAARC Regional Centers and Specialized Bodies, which led to the holding of a Programming Committee meeting at the SAARC Secretariat in March this year, SG Sarwar expressed his hopes to convene higher level meetings of the Chartered Bodies in consultations with the SAARC Chair Nepal at the earliest possible.

    President Wickremesinghe appreciated the initiatives of the SAARC Secretary General and requested him to consider taking further steps to revitalize the SAARC process given the prevailing situation emphasizing that SAARC embodies the hopes and aspirations of its peoples and countries in the region for prosperity. Upon the Secretary General’s request, the President of Sri Lanka has graciously agreed to allocate a permanent venue to the SAARC Cultural Centre in Colombo that aligns with the provisions outlined in the Headquarters Agreement signed between the Centre and Sri Lanka. President Wickremesinghe reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to SAARC and extending every possible support to materialize the goals of SAARC to achieve a sustainable and integrated development in the region through cooperation under the SAARC process.

    Bangladesh ready to import electricity from Nepal

    Kathmandu, June 13: Bangladesh is preparing to import electricity from Nepal at 8.17 taka (9 rupees 30 paisa) per unit. Nepal’s Energy Secretary Sushil Chandra Tiwari informed.

    Tuesday’s meeting of Bangladesh’s Cabinet Committee on Government Procurement approved to import of electricity through direct purchase from Nepal.

    According to Secretary Tiwari, an agreement regarding this will be reached at the Nepal Bangladesh Energy Secretary-level meeting to be held in Kathmandu on June 23 and 14. On the other hand, the Bangladeshi media also reported that the Council of Ministers decided to buy electricity from Nepal. Bangladeshi media BD News has published the news that the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Procurement of Bangladesh on Tuesday approved the import of electricity from Nepal.

    According to BD News, Mahmudul Hussain Khan, Secretary of the Coordination and Reforms Department of the Council of Ministers, has given permission to purchase electricity from Nepal at Rs 9. 30 paisa (Bengali Taka 8.17). According to BD News, it has been decided to purchase electricity worth about 6.5 billion in five years and about 1.3 billion Bangladeshi taka annually. Electricity will be transmitted to Bangladesh from Veramara in Kushtia using the Indian grid.
