Kathmandu, Aug 31: Bangladesh’s parliament has unanimously passed a condolence motion expressing deep sorrow over the deaths caused by the devastating floods in Nepal.
The motion conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families who lost loved ones in the disaster.
Following a discussion on the motion, lawmakers observed a one-minute silence in honour of the victims. A prayer was then offered for the eternal peace of those who died. Bangladesh’s Minister for Religious Affairs, Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain, led the prayer.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed also expressed deep sorrow over the heavy loss of life caused by floods and landslides in Nepal.
In a condolence message, Speaker Ahmed extended his sympathies to the bereaved Nepali families. He also prayed for eternal peace for those who lost their lives and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
The devastating flood struck the Gosainkunda Rural Municipality area of Rasuwa on August 26, causing extensive loss of life and property.
A sudden surge in the Bhotekoshi River, triggered by floodwaters and debris, damaged settlements, roads, bridges and hydropower projects along the river corridor.
The disaster also affected tourists travelling to Mount Kailash and Mansarovar, along with local communities and critical infrastructure.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, 903 bodies have been recovered from the Bhotekoshi flood as of 9 am Monday.
The authority said 4,227 people remain missing, while 10,451 people have been rescued. Unidentified bodies are being kept at 21 hospitals in different districts.
A total of 267 people have been injured, with 156 already discharged after treatment.
Some 20,819 security personnel have been mobilised for search, rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations. The deployment includes 8,722 Nepal Army personnel, 7,894 Nepal Police personnel and 4,203 Armed Police Force personnel.
