Kathmandu, Aug 28: A lake formed after water was blocked in Gyirong near the Nepal-China border in Tibet has burst, prompting fresh warnings for people involved in rescue and relief operations to move to safer locations.
Nepal Police issued the alert after receiving information that water has started flowing again toward the Tibetan side. Security personnel, rescue workers and others in the area have been urged to remain vigilant and warn people nearby to move to safety.
The development has raised concerns over possible renewed water surges along the border as rescue and relief operations continue in communities already devastated by floods and landslides.
Heavy rain in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, tonight
Rasuwa, Nuwakot and surrounding flood-affected areas face the risk of further rain tonight, raising the possibility of landslides, sudden rises in streams and additional damage.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has urged residents and people travelling through the affected areas to remain particularly alert after dark.
Senior meteorologist Min Kumar Aryal said moderate to heavy rainfall was recorded at several locations over the past 24 hours. Jambu Gobre in Sindhupalchok received the highest rainfall at 116.6 mm, followed by Ghorahi in Lumbini Province with 102.4 mm. Lomanthang recorded 76.2 mm and Parasi 70.4 mm, while Bandipur received 43.8 mm in six hours.
Most hilly areas are expected to receive moderate rainfall this afternoon, with some parts of the mountain and Terai regions also likely to see rain.
Dhading, Nuwakot and Rasuwa remain a particular concern, with moderate to heavy rain forecast from the afternoon into the night. Moderate rainfall is expected in many parts of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Madhesh provinces, while isolated areas of the hills in Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki could receive heavy rain.
