Kathmandu, Nov 7: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has made special arrangements to ensure a reliable, regular and quality power supply during the Tihar and Chhath festivals.
To prevent disruptions during Tihar, the festival of lights, the authority has stepped up preparations to keep power generation, transmission and distribution systems running smoothly. Technical staff will remain on standby around the clock.
A meeting of the authority’s senior management team, chaired by Executive Director Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha, discussed preparations for maintaining uninterrupted power supply and addressing potential challenges during the festivals.
The authority also held a joint virtual meeting with chiefs of the Load Dispatch Centre (LDC), Grid Operation Department and provincial and divisional offices under the Distribution and Customer Service Directorate. The meeting focused on power supply management, system monitoring and deployment of the required workforce.
According to an NEA press statement, Shrestha directed office chiefs to complete all necessary preparations to prevent power disruptions throughout the festive period.
He also instructed them to keep technical teams ready to carry out immediate repairs and restore services if any supply problems arise.
Pending inspection and maintenance work on transmission lines and distribution systems has been ordered to be completed promptly to minimise the risk of disruptions.
Office chiefs have also been directed to ensure that calls received through the NEA’s No Light service are answered regularly and complaints related to electricity supply are addressed promptly.
The NEA estimates that electricity demand will peak at around 1,700 megawatts on the evening of Laxmi Puja, the main day of Tihar. Executive Director Shrestha said domestic generation alone would be sufficient to meet the demand.
Electricity generation during the period is projected to reach around 2,500 megawatts. With domestic production expected to exceed demand, sufficient power will be available to ensure smooth supply, he said.
The LDC, Grid Operation Department and distribution centres will coordinate continuously to monitor electricity demand and supply throughout the festive period. Technical and management teams have also been prepared to identify potential system problems early and resolve them immediately.
The authority has urged consumers to use electricity safely during Tihar and Chhath. It has advised households to inspect electrical appliances and wiring, avoid low quality electrical materials, and seek help from qualified technicians rather than attempting to repair electrical leakage or faulty wiring themselves.
