Ashika, mayors engage in verbal sparring on waste management

Kathmandu, Aug 22: A dispute broke out between Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Ashika Tamang and local government chiefs during a meeting on waste management in Kathmandu Valley.

Information and Communications Minister Dr Bikram Timilsina had convened a meeting at Singha Durbar on Friday with chiefs and representatives of local governments in Kathmandu Valley that have been managing waste at Banchare Danda.

A heated exchange took place between the local government chiefs and Tamang during the meeting. The dispute began after Tamang remarked that the chiefs of the affected local governments were not present and that even some of the representatives who had attended appeared eager to leave.

Lalitpur Metropolitan City Mayor Chiribabu Maharjan objected to what he described as Tamang’s aggressive manner. He urged her to study the history of waste management rather than attacking local governments.

“Look, your remarks are very aggressive. This cannot be done this way. You also need to study the history of waste management,” he said.

Tamang immediately hit the table, saying, “The discussion should take place at Banchare Danda, not here.”

As the dispute with the local government chiefs escalated, Tamang walked out of the meeting room.

After she left, the local government chiefs complained that the meeting had not been properly coordinated.
