SC orders release of journalist Kishor Shrestha

Kathmandu, Aug 17: The Supreme Court has issued a mandamus ordering the release of journalist Kishor Shrestha and also asked the authorities to return all confiscated computers and gadgets from his office and house.

The order was issued while hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by his wife, Saraswati Shrestha. The court directed authorities to release him on his personal recognisance or keep him on a date for further investigation.

A bench of Justices Nahakul Subedi and Balkrishna Dhakal issued the release order.

Police arrested Shrestha on August 12 over a news report and photograph published by Jan Aastha Online, alleging that they violated an individual’s right to privacy. He had remained in custody since then while police investigated the case.

The Supreme Court order noted that the photograph published with Shrestha’s news report appeared to have been uploaded by the complainant himself on social media. It also said the opposing side had failed to dispute this fact.
