Kathmandu, April 1: The United States has updated its travel advisory for Nepal, lowering the risk level to Level 2 while still urging its citizens to remain cautious during their visit.
The revised advisory, issued on March 31, reflects an improved security situation following the nationwide protests that began in September 2025. Authorities note that those demonstrations have largely subsided and conditions are returning to normal. Still, the advisory warns that protests and localized unrest can erupt without notice, particularly in urban areas.
US citizens are advised to avoid large gatherings and follow instructions from local authorities, as some demonstrations may turn violent.
On healthcare, the advisory states that while hospitals in Kathmandu offer relatively better services than other regions, they often face overcrowding, limited equipment, and medicine shortages. It also highlights that treatment usually requires upfront payment, and the Nepali government does not cover medical costs for foreign nationals.
Travelers are encouraged to carry necessary medications and obtain travel insurance that includes medical evacuation.
The advisory also flags Nepal’s exposure to natural disasters, including earthquakes, floods, and landslides. During the monsoon season from June to September, heavy rains can trigger flash floods and landslides, disrupting roads and emergency services.
US citizens planning to visit Nepal are advised to register with the embassy or consulate for updates, monitor local news, and adjust travel plans if needed.
