China calls killing of Iranian security chief ‘unacceptable’

Kathmandu, March: China has strongly condemned the killing of Iran’s national security chief Ali Larijani in an Israeli airstrike on Thursday, calling the act “unacceptable.”

While Beijing is a partner of Tehran, it has also criticized Iran’s attacks on Gulf states hosting US military bases.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said at a press briefing, “We have always opposed the use of force in international relations. The killing of Iranian state leaders and attacks on civilian targets are even more unacceptable.” He urged all sides to immediately halt military actions and prevent the situation from spiraling out of control.

Larijani is the most senior Iranian official killed since the war began on February 28, following the deaths of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other top figures. His killing marks another sharp turn in a conflict that keeps escalating like a fire no one seems willing to put out.

China has stepped up its diplomatic engagement, placing added importance on the visit of its special envoy for the Middle East, Zhai Jun. He has been meeting senior officials in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Egypt in an effort to push for mediation.

According to Lin, Zhai has stressed the need to avoid strikes on non-military targets and ensure the safety of shipping routes. China has said it will continue diplomatic efforts from Beijing and has also decided to provide humanitarian assistance to Iran, Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq.

The latest developments show a region already stretched thin, now pulled tighter like a rope under strain, with each move risking a wider confrontation.
