Nepali peacekeepers’ camp in Lebanon attacked, no casualties

Kathmandu, March 15: An attack struck a camp of Nepali peacekeepers deployed in Lebanon under a United Nations peacekeeping mission.

According to reports by AFP, the attack targeted the battalion headquarters of Nepali peacekeepers. The incident occurred on Friday evening, but all Nepali soldiers remained safe.

Spokesperson of the Nepali Army, Rajaram Basnet, said explosions were reported in Mais-al- Jabal, where Nepali peacekeepers are stationed.

He said a house in the area was damaged and some personal belongings of Nepali peacekeepers were affected, but there were no human casualties.

More than 500 Nepali peacekeepers are currently deployed across Lebanon. Their operations are coordinated by a battalion headquarters located in southern Lebanon near the border with Israel.

The force commander there is Brigadier General Man Bahadur Thapa. All peacekeepers remained safe as they were inside bunkers when the attack occurred.

Authorities have not yet confirmed how many peacekeepers were present at the headquarters during the attack.

Basnet said personnel frequently rotate in and out of the camp, making it difficult to determine the exact number present at that time.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported that an Israeli shell landed inside the headquarters of the Nepali battalion serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon in Mais-al-Jabal.

However, the Nepali Army said it has not yet confirmed where the attack originated. An investigation is underway.

The incident occurred while Antonio Guterres was visiting Lebanon.

Guterres said targeting peacekeepers is unacceptable and called for an immediate end to the escalating conflict.

He urged the international community to intensify efforts to restore peace.

Guterres said people in Lebanon, Israel, and other countries have the right to live without fear.
