There is a popular saying in English, “A stitch on time saves nine”. The present Nepali situation has become much worse and vulnerable. The non-productive sector expenditure has increased enormously, on the other hand, the government revenue has been declined and unable to meet the ambitious revenue target. The government is dependent on domestic as well as foreign loans. According to the government mouthpiece, Gorkhapatra Daily, the government has raised 57 billion from the public as debts within the four months of the current fiscal year. Such a situation had never happened in the financial history of the country. Already, in the past five years, the government debts have doubled. If such a trend continues, Nepal is surely going to face the fate of Sri Lanka or say, she will fall into the “debt trap”. Except for the Finance Minister, others believe that the country’s economic shape is much worse. If the government doesn’t seek ways to reduce non-productive sector expenditure, Nepal cannot escape the “debt trap” crisis. Clearly, along with the introduction of the federal structure with seven provinces and 753 local bodies, along with a huge federal parliament and the trend of assigning dozens of advisors, experts and aides by the President, PM and ministers, the government expenditure has increased tremendously, whereas, the revenue sources are very limited. It has already been proven that the present political system doesn’t suit Nepal. Nevertheless, a small group of political leaders, who are enjoying the cream of the system, are advocating the beauty of the present political system, otherwise, intellectuals, academicians and even some political parties are opposing the present system saying that Nepal like a tiny country cannot bear the load of federalism. Indeed, secularism has supported the Christian campaigners and republicanism has contributed to making hundreds of new kings by replacing one king. Ultimately, if we still follow the existing political system, it will contribute to abolishing the Nepali identity and also the existence of a sovereign and independent country Nepal. To save Nepal, a timely stitch is needed, otherwise, it will be too late.
