The path ahead

Editorial

The nation on 29 May observed 16th republic day but the commoners are unable to experience the fruits of republicanism. There left no doubt that the present constitution is not functional and if tried to function forcefully, the nation is to meet an accident. The nation’s revenue has declined by 63 per cent to the targeted goal set by the government, whereas, the government could spend only 31 per cent of the development expenditure set by itself. The Nepal Rastra Bank has issued treasury bills worth 29.13 billion rupees. The government has presented the budget for the new fiscal year by cutting down the expenditure sealing of the provincial governments and local bodies due to the scarcity of funds. In the past five years, the nation’s debt burden has become double and the process of receiving debts has not been stopped. The government is directly paying salaries, allowances and facilities to above 36 thousand people’s representatives. The provincial structure has become a white elephant for the government. This is just one part of the scenario.

The other part is that the present political system is full of anomalies in all sectors. Corruption practices have become an integral part of the system. Nepotism, favouritism, sycophancy, mal-governance, etc have appeared as the obvious characteristics of republicanism. Every day, the level of frustration among the people is inclining and they are seeking alternatives to the present governance.

The nation has reached a state of dissolution but the political leaders are less bothered about the situation. They are involved in rampant corruption and power sharing for an organized loot on the government coffer. The former King has become an attraction and a hope for those helpless people today. Former King Gyanendra is attending one after another civic assemblies that started from Kakirvitta in the East to Sunsari, Nepalgunj, Dhangadhi, and Surkhet. In every gathering, we could see a human sea of people seeking political change. The former King addressed the gatherings in different places making aware the citizens of the past national glory. On Saturday, addressing a civic assembly in Birendranagar, Surkhet said that the present system is salable only for a short time but not sustainable. Earlier, in the Dhangadhi civic assembly, the former King had said that to make the beautiful dream of tomorrow come true according to Nepali opinion, belief and spirit, let’s give the responsibility to the Nepali people.

There left very few options before us. Either wait for the demise of this beautiful nation or stand up together with all the Nepali citizens loving their motherland for a change. The citizens should come up for a decisive agitation against the present perversion. There appears a strong school of thought for a round-table conference through a broader consensus among all the political forces and if the issue is not resolved, a referendum should be conducted to decide the fate of the nation.
