Former Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara is now doing his days at the Dilli Bazaar-based jail after the Kathmandu District Court on Monday ordered to send him to judicial custody on the charge of attempted rape.
A single bench of justice Sudarshan Raj Pandey decided to send him to the judicial custody.
During a trial hearing on Monday, four public prosecutors had demanded a seven-and-a-half-year jail term for Mahara.
He has been accused of attempting to rape a woman of the Federal Parliament Secretariat. The victim had filed a first information report on October 4, accusing Mahara of attempting to rape her on September 29 at her rented room in Tinkune, Kathmandu.
He quit the top post following the allegations.
Mahara, regarded to be one of the gentlemen in the ruling Nepal Communist Party, however, has been denying the charges.
More interesting, the woman who is said to be the victim, has also started saying that Mahara was innocent. The woman has been changing her statement right from the next day she first accused Mahara of misbehaving her.
Mahara himself has termed the case as a political conspiracy hatched against him. Those who knew Mahara closely also cannot believe that he made rape attempt. But evidences suggested otherwise, he has reached the jail from the chair of the House Speaker.
Although Mahara has not pointed finger at particular individuals for hatching the conspiracy, different conspiracy theories are now doing the round.
First, they said Mahara was made target to finish the political career of Pushpa Kamal Dahal, one of the chairmen of the ruling Nepal Communist Party.Mahara has been close to Dahal all the time.
Second, Dahal himself played a role to end the political career of Mahara feraing the latter’s rising position.
Thirdly, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was not happy with Mahara for blocking the passage of the bill relating to the Millennium Challenge Corporation, the US aid agency, and he hatched the conspiracy against him.
There are others that Mahara’s career was finished to end Nepal’s engagement in the One Belt One Road Initiative of China. According to them, Mahara was close to Chinese leader and he was targeted to weaken Nepal-China relations.
No matter who had hatched the conspiracy, the political career of Mahara has ended, and he became the topmost politician to lose the political post on a rape charge.
