Kathmandu, Oct 26: Heavy rain is forecast across parts of Nepal from Thursday, with areas stretching from Gandaki to Koshi provinces facing an increased risk of flooding, landslides and travel disruption.
Meteorologist Binod Pokharel said the likelihood of a significant change in weather had strengthened, with two major forecasting models, the Global Forecast System (GFS) and the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), supporting the rainfall outlook. The possibility of rain has been indicated in forecasts for the past 10 to 12 days, he said.
A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal could develop into a cyclone before making landfall along India’s Andhra Pradesh coast and moving north, according to current projections.
Although the system is expected to weaken into a low-pressure system before reaching Nepal, it could still bring substantial rainfall. Moisture-laden air from the system may interact with a low-pressure trough in the upper atmosphere, creating conditions favourable for heavy rain, Pokharel said.
Many places across Gandaki, Bagmati and Koshi provinces could receive heavy rain from Thursday through Friday night. The timing and intensity of rainfall may vary from one district to another, making local forecasts important for assessing the level of risk.
Heavy rain during this period could disrupt road travel, damage crops and trigger landslides in vulnerable areas. Rivers and streams may also rise rapidly, particularly in locations already exposed to flooding or with saturated ground. People travelling in the hills and mountains could face additional risks from unstable slopes and road blockages.
Pokharel urged the public to follow updated forecasts because the expected timing, location and volume of rainfall could change as the weather system develops.
Farmers have been advised to take precautions to protect crops and livestock, while people planning trips to mountainous areas should check weather and road conditions before setting out. Local authorities and travellers should also remain alert to warnings of heavy rain and possible hazards.
The forecast calls for particular attention from Thursday to Friday night, though conditions may change as the system moves closer to Nepal.
