Air passengers protest against NOTAM during PM Oli’s return from Azerbaijan

Kathmandu, 27 October: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was returning home from Azerbaijan in Quarter Air flight Sunday morning. The Tribhuvan International Airport had announced NOTAM (notice to airmen for traffic halt) for the safety of the VIP flight carrying the PM.

The Sri Airlines aircraft boarded with 70 passengers bound to Nepalgunj was at the taxi-way. The Air Traffic Control asked to halt the flight and the flight attendants informed that the aircraft was halted for some time due to the VIP flight. Immediately, the passengers started to protest and they forced to open the already closed aircraft door. Then the passengers got down from the aircraft and chanted slogan against NOTAM and the PM. When the situation became out of control, the Airport Police had reached the aircraft parked area. In the meantime, the VIP flight was landed  and the passengers again chanted slogan against the PM and NOTAM.

According to the civil aviation law, once the aircraft door is closed, it should not be opened. However, angry passengers forced the aircraft attendants to open the door and the passengers got down from the aircraft violating the law.

This is not the first time that passengers have expressed anger from issuance of NOTAM during arrival and departure of the President, VP and Prime Minister.

Aircraft are being kept on hold in the sky for hours in the name of NOTAM.
