Janakpurdham, Oct 18: The CPN UML and Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal (JSP Nepal) held discussions on forming a new government in Madhesh Province on Saturday.
CPN UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli, JSP Nepal Chairman Upendra Yadav and other leaders from the two parties took part in the talks. Saroj Kumar Yadav, leader of the JSP Nepal parliamentary party in Madhesh, was also present.
A leader said the discussions focused on forming a new government under JSP Nepal’s leadership. According to the leader, efforts are underway to build a new coalition with Saroj Kumar Yadav as chief minister.
On Friday, the CPN UML withdrew its support for the Madhesh government led by the Nepali Congress, leaving the provincial government in a fresh political crisis.
No decision to join government with UML: Upendra Yadav
JSP Nepal Chairman Upendra Yadav, however, said his party had not decide to join a government in cooperation with the UML.
In a Facebook post, Yadav said the party had neither adopted a policy nor reached an understanding with the UML on participating in the government. He added that cooperation with the UML to join the government was not immediately possible.
“Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal has neither made a decision nor adopted a policy to join the government in cooperation with the CPN UML at present. It has not reached any understanding with anyone on this matter,” Yadav wrote. “At present, this is not possible either.”
JSP Nepal is the largest party in the Madhesh Provincial Assembly, with 27 seats. The UML has 23 seats, followed by the Nepali Congress with 22 and the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) with 15.
The 107-member provincial assembly requires 54 seats for a majority.
