PM disaster relief funds swell to Rs 17.54 billion

Kathmandu, Oct 12: Government disaster relief funds receiving contributions following the Bhotekoshi floods in Rasuwa now hold Rs 17.54 billion, according to the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers.

The balance is spread across accounts of the Prime Minister Natural Disaster Rescue Fund and the Prime Minister Relief Fund. Contributions continue to arrive as authorities support affected communities and assess reconstruction needs.

Nine accounts at Rastriya Banijya Bank hold Rs 12.95 billion. Dollar accounts at Himalayan Bank and Laxmi Sunrise Bank hold a combined US$28.72 million.

The government has allocated Rs 1 billion from the deposited funds for flood-affected areas. The figures represent account balances, while the allocation is money earmarked for assistance.

The August 26 Bhotekoshi disaster swept away homes, bridges and riverside infrastructure, leaving communities facing displacement, disrupted transport and damaged livelihoods. Recovery requires both immediate assistance and longer-term rebuilding.

The government has also announced plans to build 50 temporary prefabricated houses for flood victims before Phulpati, the seventh day of Dashain. The project is expected to cost around Rs 30 million and will be financed through the Prime Minister’s disaster relief fund.

The growing fund balance comes as another sudden flood struck the Budhigandaki valley on Sunday. Preliminary reports recorded 45 homes destroyed, 27 partially damaged and eight bridges swept away. Five people remain missing.

The latest disaster has added pressure on rescue, shelter and reconstruction resources while authorities continue responding to the earlier Bhotekoshi devastation. Both emergencies have left affected families needing sustained support.
