
KATHMANDU: Gagan Thapa has been elected president of the Nepali Congress from the party’s ongoing 15th General Convention.
Thapa secured 6,584 votes, while his rival Shyam Krishna Khadgi received 375 votes. A total of 54 votes were declared invalid.
Of the 7,013 votes cast for the presidential race, Thapa received 93.88 per cent, while Khadgi secured 5.35 per cent.
Voting to elect the new leadership under the 15th General Convention was held on Friday. Polling began at 8:30 am and continued until 10 pm. Vote counting began immediately after polling closed.
A total of 7,039 convention delegates cast their ballots in the leadership election out of 7,317 eligible voters, representing a turnout of 96.20 per cent. A total of 278 delegates did not vote.
With the counting of votes for the party president completed, election officials will now begin counting ballots for the remaining positions.
