35 Years Ago: Sudden Spurt in Western Interest

Speculations regarding a series of highly place visits from the Western democracies appear inevitable when within a week Nepal received dignitaries from the United State, the United Kingdom and Germany.

The Deputy Assistant Secretary of the U.S, Ms Teresita Schaffer came to Kathmandu Monday, the British Under Secretary of State made a similar visit here the same day and a regional parliamentary team from Germany dropped in Friday.

The spurt of diplomatic activity coming from the West is being considered a probe into possible changes in Nepal’s foreign policy and diplomacy after the advance of the multiparty system, particularly, after the formation of an elected party government in the country.
