Bhotekoshi flood: Nepal Red Cross to provide Rs 100,000 to each victim’s family

Kathmandu, Oct. 7: The Nepal Red Cross Society will provide Rs 100,000 each to eligible families affected by the Bhotekoshi flood, with nearly 6,000 households initially estimated to qualify for assistance.

Jagan Chapagain, Secretary General and CEO of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), announced the assistance during a visit to flood affected areas last week.

The aid will be distributed through the government’s “Samunnati Program” under an agreement signed Tuesday between the Red Cross and the Ministry of Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities, and Social Security.

Nepal Red Cross Secretary General Rishi Raman Khanal said the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority will provide data on affected households. Beneficiaries will be selected after verification, and the money will be deposited directly into their bank accounts.

Families can use the assistance for food, clothing, health and sanitation, household essentials, transportation, communication and livelihoods.

Priority will be given to vulnerable households, including those headed by women, people with disabilities, children requiring special care, senior citizens, marginalized communities, gender and sexual minorities, and people with other special needs.

Local governments will help identify and verify beneficiaries, while the Red Cross will manage cash and voucher assistance, community coordination and monitoring.

The Red Cross said its humanitarian response to the flood is continuing. It has prepared a three -month plan covering cash assistance, shelter, water and sanitation, mental health, protection, community engagement and social inclusion.

IFRC Nepal chief David Fisher said international financial assistance was being received following the federation’s appeal for flood relief.
