23 power projects come into operation, adding 529 MW to national grid

Kathmandu, Aug 17: Twenty-three new power projects came into operation in Nepal last fiscal year, adding 528.99 megawatts of electricity to the national grid.

According to the Nepal Electricity Authority, the projects were developed by independent power producers and became operational in fiscal year 2025/26.

With the addition of these projects, the number of privately-operated power projects has reached 227, with a combined installed capacity of 3,459 MW.

The authority said 213 projects with a combined capacity of 6,472.21 MW are currently under construction. Another 105 projects with a combined capacity of more than 2,200 MW are at various stages of development.

The Nepal Electricity Authority said it continues to sign power purchase agreements with the private sector to support the development of the country’s energy sector.

During the last fiscal year, the authority signed 54 new PPAs. These included agreements to purchase 28.6 MW from five hydropower projects and 675 MW from 49 solar projects.

With these additions, the total number of PPAs signed with independent power producers has reached 545, covering a combined contracted capacity of 12,135 MW.

As private sector participation in power generation continues to grow, the authority has also introduced a policy to involve private companies in transmission line development under the Build, Own, Operate and Transfer, or BOOT, model.

Under the government approved Tariff Based Competitive Bidding framework, the authority has received expressions of interest from potential service providers for the construction of four transmission line projects. The proposals are currently under evaluation.
