Kathmandu, Aug 8: The Flood Forecasting Division has warned of a moderate risk of flash floods in small rivers and streams across 23 districts, urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert.
In its flood forecast bulletin issued Saturday morning, the division said water levels in the country’s major and medium-sized rivers remain below warning levels. Water levels in the Koshi, Narayani, Bagmati, Karnali and Mahakali rivers and their tributaries are currently normal. Flows in the Kankai, Kamala, Babai, East Rapti and West Rapti rivers are also below warning levels.
However, water levels in smaller rivers flowing through the districts of Taplejung, Sankhuwasabha, Solukhumbu, Okhaldhunga, Dolakha, Ramechhap, Sindhupalchok, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, and Kavrepalanchok are expected to rise significantly.
A moderate risk of flash floods has also been forecast in small rivers and streams around Gorkha, Lamjung, Baglung, Tanahun, Myagdi, Kaski, Salyan, East Rukum, West Rukum, Jajarkot and Bajhang. Residents living near riverbanks have been urged to exercise caution.
The division said some small rivers in Koshi and Gandaki provinces could also see sudden rises in water levels on Sunday and Monday.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology and the Flood Forecasting Division have urged people living near small rivers and streams to take extra precautions over the coming days.
