A statue of Chandra Bahadur Thapa, the country’s first chief secretary, was unveiled on Saturday, May 30, at a ceremony held at the Gokarna Peace and Civil Service Park in Kathmandu.

The statue was unveiled by Nepal Government’s Chief Secretary Suman Raj Aryal. Financial support for the construction of the statue was provided by Gokarneshwor Municipality.

The ceremony was addressed by several distinguished personalities, including former minister Deepak Risal, pro-democracy activist Tulsi Narayan Shrestha, Dr. Vijay Thapa, Sudarshan Sigdel, and others, who highlighted the life, character, and contributions of Chandra Bahadur Thapa.

Thapa was a highly respected patriot, nationalist, and honest public servant who earned acclaim in Nepal’s civil service, military, and police institutions. He held the prestigious positions of Nepal’s first Chief Secretary and first Auditor General.

Thapa was one of the rare figures in Nepal’s history to have served as Inspector General of Police (IGP), Secretary, Chief Secretary, and Auditor General.

He also served in the military and attained the rank of Lieutenant General.

Thapa became Nepal’s first Chief Secretary on Ashwin 28, 2012 BS and served until Asar 14, 2016 BS.

During the formative years of Nepal’s modern administration, he established a reputation for integrity and patriotism by promoting financial transparency and accountability and by fearlessly presenting factual reports to the Head of State, the King.

In recognition of his outstanding administrative contributions, a commemorative book titled Biplav Purush Chandra Bahadur Thapa (Revolutionary Figure Chandra Bahadur Thapa), based on his life and work, has also been published.
