Kathmandu, March 27: Nepal is preparing to swear in a new Prime Minister today. Rastriya Swatantra Party senior leader Balendra Shah will take the oath of office and secrecy at 12:34 PM at Sheetal Niwas. President Ram Chandra Paudel will administer the oath in a ceremony expected to draw political leaders, diplomats, civil society figures, and senior state officials.
The President’s Office said ministers joining the new cabinet are also likely to take their oath during the same program. Security has been tightened around the presidential residence as preparations for the event move into the final stage.
Shah will receive formal notification of his appointment shortly before the ceremony begins. His government will be formed under Article 76(1) of the Constitution, which allows the leader of the largest party in the House of Representatives to head the government. That arrangement gives the new administration a clear mandate to form a single party government.
The development follows the parliamentary election held on March 4, where the Rastriya Swatantra Party secured a commanding victory. The party won 182 seats in the House of Representatives, placing it well ahead of its rivals and in a comfortable position to lead the government without coalition partners.
Soon after the results, the party’s lawmakers selected Shah as their parliamentary party leader, clearing the way for him to become prime minister. Shah was elected from Jhapa Constituency 5 with 68,348 votes.
Earlier, the newly elected lawmakers also completed a constitutional step before the government formation. The senior most member of the House, Arjun Narasingh KC, administered the oath of office and secrecy to the members of parliament.
Shah’s rise to the top job reflects the growing public demand for political change after years of unstable coalition governments and public frustration with traditional parties. Expectations are already high. Voters now want proof that a strong electoral victory can translate into steady governance and practical results for the country.
