Doha, March 23: Iran has said it will not step back from its conflict with the United States and Israel, insisting the fighting will continue until compensation is paid for what it calls a joint US-Israeli attack.
The statement came after former US President Donald Trump announced a five-day suspension of attacks on Iran.
Mohsen Rezaei, senior military adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, said in a television interview that Iran would continue the war until the damages caused by the attacks are compensated.
Rezaei also demanded that all economic sanctions imposed on Iran be lifted and that the United States provide a firm guarantee that it will not interfere in Iran’s affairs in the future.
He said the Iranian military is fighting at full capacity and that the country remains stable under the leadership of Khamenei.
Rezaei claimed the war could have ended within a week, but continued because of Israel. According to him, the United States was ready for a ceasefire, and negotiations were moving toward ending the conflict. He said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted on continuing the attacks, which prolonged the war.
Rezaei also claimed that by the fifteenth day of the conflict, the United States had realized it had little chance of winning the confrontation.
Meanwhile, Trump said the United States is exploring possible options for a new political arrangement in Iran.
Speaking to journalists in Florida, Trump said one option could involve bringing in a new leader similar to the approach taken in Venezuela, while another possibility could involve a joint leadership model working alongside the United States.
Trump also claimed that Iran is eager for talks and wants to reach an agreement soon. He earlier announced a five-day pause in attacks on Iran.
Trump had previously suggested that a change of leadership in Iran was possible and said discussions were underway with a specific individual. Iran has rejected those claims. ( Agencies)
