Washington, March 22: US President Donald Trump has given Iran a 48-hour deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, warning that the United States will destroy Iranian energy facilities if the waterway is not reopened within that time.
Under normal conditions, around 20 per cent of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passes through the strait, making it a key route for global energy supply.
Trump announced in a post on his Truth Social platform at 23:44 GMT on March 21. This gives Iran until 23:44 GMT on March 23, which is 03:14 am Tehran time on March 24, to comply with the demand.
“If Iran does not fully and unconditionally reopen the Strait of Hormuz within exactly 48 hours from this moment, the United States will strike and destroy various Iranian energy sites, starting with the largest ones,” Trump wrote.
According to Iranian state media, Tehran has warned that if it comes under attack, it will target energy facilities linked to the United States across the Gulf region.
Oil prices have surged in recent weeks due to Iran’s blockade of the waterway and attacks on vessels.
