NC President Thapa resigns

Kathmandu, March 19: Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has stepped down from his position. He submitted his resignation to Vice President Bishwaprakash Sharma, according to sources close to him. The resignation was handed over a few days ago and will be discussed in the upcoming Central Committee meeting.

Calls for Thapa’s resignation had been growing within the party after the party’s poor performance and his defeat in the House of Representatives election held on March 5. He lost from Sarlahi-4. Soon after the loss, he had met Vice President Sharma and expressed his intention to resign.

Thapa had already met Sharma and submitted his resignation days earlier.

The issue will formally enter discussion during the Central Committee meeting scheduled for Friday afternoon at the party’s central office.

Party spokesperson Devraj Chalise said he had not received any formal information about the resignation. He noted that even if the resignation has been submitted to the vice president, it will only be formally addressed during the Central Committee meeting.

An official at the party’s central office recalled that, as per party statute, the Central Committee has the authority to either accept or reject Thapa’s resignation. According to the official, the committee may also choose to reject it.
