Nepal at UN: Ambassador Thapa stresses domestic reform and global solidariy

New York, Sept 30: Nepal’s UN Ambassador Lok Bahadur Thapa, addressing the General Assembly on Monday, underscored the need for domestic reforms and stronger global solidarity to tackle mounting crises.

Thapa highlighted Nepal’s recent political turbulence, noting the “Gen-Z protests” that demanded transparency, equal opportunity, and an end to corruption. While acknowledging the violence and loss during the unrest, he said the youth’s aspirations reflected the country’s push for a fairer and more prosperous future.

He pointed to key milestones since the protests, including the appointment of Nepal’s first female Prime Minister and elections scheduled for March 2026, calling them vital for consolidating democracy and restoring trust.

On global issues, Thapa warned of surging military spending, stalled progress on sustainable development, and worsening climate impacts. He urged revitalisation of multilateral institutions to address these threats. Citing wars in Ukraine, Sudan, and the Sahel, he drew attention to the suffering in Gaza and pressed for the release of all hostages, including a Nepali student abducted during Hamas’s October 7 attacks in Israel.

He pressed for faster progress toward the 2030 Agenda and ambitious climate action, stressing emissions cuts and renewable energy expansion. He also called for fairer representation in financial institutions and the UN Security Council, demanding greater inclusivity and accountability.

Recalling the UN’s 80-year role as a beacon of peace and justice, Thapa closed with a call for collective responsibility, warning that when the UN falters, it is the innocent and vulnerable who pay the highest price.
