‘Suspicious’ theft of major case files belonging to Rabi, Prasain and Chudamani Sharma

Kathmandu, Sept 23: Several major case files have gone missing in what appears to be a targeted act of arson and theft at two government attorney offices near Maitighar Mandala. The theft and arson occurred on September 9 during the Gen Z protest.

The missing files are linked to the Tax Settlement Commission corruption case, the Swarnalaxmi Cooperative fraud, and the violent incident in Tinkune last Chaitra.

From the Special Government Attorney’s Office, the file on the Tax Settlement Commission corruption case has disappeared. From the Kathmandu District Government Attorney’s Office, files on the Swarnalaxmi Cooperative fraud and the Tinkune violence case were burned, along with other documents.

The loss of the Tax Settlement Commission file is seen as deliberate, as no other files were touched. This case had reached the Supreme Court, which had ordered a retrial and returned the file to the Special Court.

The Swarnalaxmi Cooperative case involves fraud charges against several individuals, including a former home minister, while the Tinkune violence case involves politically connected figures.

Many other files in Kathmandu have been burned, including cases related to cooperatives and crimes against the state. Hard drives and other documents were also stolen from the offices, though file cabinets remain intact and most files were left untouched, suggesting specific targeting.

Officials suspect the thefts were carried out during the recent Gen Z protests, which also saw arson at court buildings, including the Supreme Court, and a jailbreak.

The government is said to be pushing for immediate action against those who used the protests to damage public property and steal documents, framing this as a test of its stance against impunity.
