People’s sentiments and aspirations more dynamic than letters of constitution: PM Karki

Kathmandu, Sept 19: Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki said that democracy is a system designed to listen to the people, engage in dialogue, and find solutions. She made the remarks on Friday (Aswin 3) at the main ceremony held by the Constitution Day organizing committee at Tundikhel, Kathmandu.

She noted that the inability of the leadership to uphold democratic values and principles such as the commitments of the ‘Gen Z’ movement, the federal democratic governance system, civil liberties, fundamental rights, human rights, full press freedom, an independent and competent judiciary, rule of law, and good governance has had consequences.

Highlighting international trends, she said the younger generation, aware of citizen-friendly governance systems, open government, and virtual governance, has raised shared expectations for all generations and a national agenda, including employment opportunities, quality of life, transparency in government operations, legal equality, ending corruption, good governance, and development.

She added that the current government is committed to adopting these agendas and working according to public expectations.

Clarifying that she has no personal ambitions for power or position, she said that at a time when the country faced crises, she could not remain silent in response to the youth’s demand for change. She took on the role of interim Prime Minister to manage the transition and ensure that, within six months and in accordance with Nepal’s constitution, a representative government is elected and responsibly handed over.

Prime Minister Karki emphasized that Constitution Day is a day of pride for all Nepalis. She said the day is not only a celebration but also an occasion to evaluate the values of the federal democratic republic.
