Kathmandu: Contracts for long-stalled and abandoned development projects under the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, and the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Urban Development are set to be terminated.
Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister, Physical Infrastructure and Transport, and Urban Development Minister Kulman Ghising has instructed the secretaries and department heads of all three ministries to immediately prepare and submit a list of these dilapidated projects.
While reviewing the operations of the three ministries, Minister Ghising said contractors who do not work would not be allowed to leave projects in an abandoned state.
He said, “Ongoing major infrastructure projects are not being completed on time or to the required quality. On one hand, the country suffers huge economic losses, and on the other, citizens are deprived of the benefits these projects could provide. Now we cannot let personal considerations interfere. Identify and assess these projects and submit the list immediately.”
He added, “Work cannot proceed without decisions. Therefore, take decisions and then implement them. The contracts for projects that have become dilapidated must be terminated and go through a new contracting process. Projects cannot be left unfinished.”
Under irrigation, the Sunkoshi Marin Multipurpose Project, considered a national pride, remains stalled. Under physical infrastructure, over three dozen roads and more than one hundred bridge construction projects are left incomplete.
