Govt declares Gen Z protest victims as martyrs

Kathmandu, Sept 15: The government has decided to declare those who lost their lives during the protests as martyrs and conduct their funerals with national honors.

The government has decided to observe a National Mourning Day on Ashoj 1 (September 17). The decision was made at a cabinet meeting held at the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers’ Office in Singha Durbar on Monday evening.

According to Minister Aryal, the government will provide 1 million rupees in compensation to the families of those killed during the protests, plus 500,000 rupees for other expenses, making a total of 1.5 million rupees.

The government will also ensure free medical treatment for the injured and provide free helicopter or vehicle services to transport bodies to their hometowns in remote areas. It will assist in funeral arrangements as well.

A high-level judicial inquiry commission will be formed to investigate loss of life, property damage, and any excesses during the protests.

Similarly, a “Gen Z Awakening Memorial Park” will be built in memory of those who lost their lives during the movement.

The government led by Prime Minister Sushila Karki has also decided to withdraw all proposals that had been submitted to the cabinet for approval under the previous KP Sharma Oli-led administration.
