Kathmandu, Sept 14: Prime Minister Sushila Karki is working on putting together a small team of ministers, with the announcement expected Sunday. Plans to unveil a three-member cabinet immediately after her appointment on Friday were shelved.
In the meantime, the Gen-Z protest group has been running online polls since early Saturday to decide who should join the cabinet, recommending those with the most votes for ministerial posts.
They have already approached Om Prakash Aryal, legal adviser to Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah, to take up a portfolio and have requested one representative from the Nepal Army. The army chief, however, has said the institution will not engage in political decisions or make recommendations, though the group continues to press for a name, citing military backing of their movement.
Gen-Z leader Sudan Gurung said the group had started preparations for the virtual voting process. The same approach was used before nominating Karki as prime minister, when she won 50 percent of the votes in a Discord poll, similar to polls on X or Facebook.
The “Youth Against Corruption” group had earlier used Discord to debate the movement’s next steps, government formation, and policy direction, with over 10,000 participants joining a live session at one point. The discussion was streamed live on YouTube, Facebook, and news outlets.
On Saturday, the group again used Discord to collect suggestions, answer questions, and share live updates before deciding on the cabinet lineup. Their effort is a direct response to what they see as the political establishment’s corruption and arbitrary rule. At the time of writing, no final ministerial list had been released.
