UML Statute Convention: Delegate leaders against Bhandari’s return to active party politics

Kathamdnu, Sept 7: During group discussions on political and organizational reports on the third day of the convention in Godavari, Lalitpur, team leaders said it would be unacceptable for a figure who has already served as a guardian of the constitution and a symbol of the republic to re-enter politics. They argued that such a move would harm both the party and the democratic system.

Presenting the conclusion of Team No. 10, central member Chudamani Jungali Bishwakarma said Bhandari’s return would not only damage the party but also weaken the political system. He also stated that Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s firm position on Lipulek during his recent visit to China had boosted national morale.

Other leaders including Narayan Khatriwada, Gulab Jung Shah, Shiva Adhikari, and Bhakta Gurung also presented their group discussions. A leader attending the convention told Lokantar that there was unanimous agreement among delegates that the former president should not rejoin active politics.

A few representatives argued that to make the “Mission 084” plan meaningful, the party should provide space for Bhandari. But this minority view was not included in the group conclusions.

Delegates also expressed concern that indiscipline was rising in the party and communist values were eroding among cadres. They said UML should lead the socialist movement in a way that creates jobs as the country moves toward becoming a developed nation.

According to publicity department chief Rajendra Gautam, General Secretary Shankar Pokharel responded to questions raised during the discussions. On Saturday, participants debated Chairman KP Sharma Oli’s political report, Vice Chair Bishnu Paudel’s statute amendment proposal, and Pokharel’s organizational report. After Oli delivers his closing remarks, the convention is scheduled to conclude on Sunday.

Leaders also said the convention is preparing to endorse several political proposals.
