RSP objects to Khatiwada’s return as committee chair

Kathmandu: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has objected to the appointment of Nepali Congress lawmaker Ramhari Khatiwada as chair of the Parliamentary Hearing Committee. In a letter to Speaker Devraj Ghimire, the party urged that ethical standards be followed while making appointments to high-responsibility posts.

Khatiwada had earlier resigned as chair of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee of the House of Representatives after a parliamentary probe raised questions about irregularities related to the “cooling period.” Despite his resignation at that time, he has now been appointed to head the Parliamentary Hearing Committee, a move that the RSP strongly opposes.

“The appointment of someone who was forced to resign due to direct involvement in irregularities and moral crisis, now to the even more significant post of chairing the Parliamentary Hearing Committee, has raised questions about the ethical conduct of parliament itself,” the letter signed by RSP deputy parliamentary leader Biraj Bhakta Shrestha stated.

The letter further said that entrusting a person with a controversial background to such a high office undermines not only the dignity of parliament but also democratic values and norms.

“Therefore, we request that appointments to such sensitive positions be made based on ethical standards, public trust, and transparency, and that the process of appointing him be immediately suspended,” the letter concluded.
