Biratnagar, Sept 6: Former President and Vice President are not prohibited by the Constitution from entering politics, said Nepali Congress President and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba. He made the remarks while speaking with journalists at Biratnagar Airport.
Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has returned to politics with the CPN-UML. However, the party has decided not to renew her membership. Former Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun has already joined the politics of the CPN-Maoist Centre.
Responding to a question about whether the entry of former Presidents and Vice Presidents into politics undermines the relevance of the Constitution, Deuba said, “Honestly, I am not fully aware of many aspects. The Constitution does not explicitly forbid it, nor does it explicitly allow it.”
He also said that a two-thirds majority is required for constitutional amendments and that the process will begin once the two-thirds support is secured. Discussions with political parties are ongoing. Regarding ministers, he stated that the current government will not recall any ministers and that there have been no talks about sending new ministers in place of existing ones.
