Kathmandu , Aug 23 : The Socialist Front has opposed the agreement reached between India and China on August 19 and called for the return of Nepal’s territory.
In a statement issued Friday, the Front said, “The Socialist Front of Nepal strongly opposes and rejects such an agreement that undermines Nepal’s sovereign integrity. We also call on the government to take diplomatic initiatives to inform the concerned countries of Nepal’s position, oppose the agreement, and work to reclaim Nepal’s territory.”
On August 19, India and China agreed in New Delhi to resume trade through the Lipulekh Pass, which lies within Nepali territory. The four-party Socialist Front expressed opposition to this agreement.
The statement carried signatures of Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, chair of the CPN (Maoist Centre), Madhav Nepal, chair of the CPN (Unified Socialist), Netra Bikram Chand ‘Biplav’, general secretary of the Nepal Communist Party, and Mahendra Raya Yadav, chair of the Nepal Socialist Party.
The Front said it was gravely concerned by the recent India–China understanding to reopen the Lipulekh trade route and revive bilateral trade ties.
“Historical evidence and bilateral treaties confirm that Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura, and Kalapani are integral parts of Nepal. Yet, Indian encroachment in these territories has continued for some time,” the statement read.
The Front added that Nepal has failed to make the necessary diplomatic efforts to reclaim its land.
“Meanwhile, the India–China agreement on Lipulekh has inflicted a serious blow to Nepal’s sovereign rights,” the Front said.
