Kathmandu: Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Devendra Dahal has said that public transport fares will not be increased during this year’s Dashain and Tihar festivals.

Speaking at the Infrastructure Development Committee of the House of Representatives on Sunday, the minister said that although fares are generally adjusted according to fuel prices, the government has decided not to raise them during the festive season to avoid putting extra financial pressure on passengers. He added that transport entrepreneurs have also been urged to follow this decision.

Dahal said the government is working with transport operators to address existing problems in the sector through dialogue. He also informed the committee that road projects currently under construction at the provincial level would be handed over to the respective provincial governments.

“We have no plan to increase fares during Dashain and Tihar this year. We have told transport entrepreneurs not to raise fares when people travel in large numbers,” he said.

On the matter of ongoing road construction, the minister said the government is preparing to assign responsibility for these projects, along with daily wage workers, to provincial governments.
