Citizenship through mother’s self-declaration: Home Minister

Kathmandu, August 11: Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has said that the amendment to the citizenship law has been moved forward with the main objective of providing citizenship to children through the mother's self-declaration.
Speaking during a discussion on the Nepal Citizenship Bill 2081 BS at the Legislative Management Committee of the National Assembly on Monday, Home Minister Lekhak said that the mother is the first guardian of the child and informed that the mother has been made responsible.
The mother is the first guardian of the child. If the mother declares herself that “this is my child, the father is unknown or I cannot bring him”, the child will be eligible to get the Nepali citizenship, the Minister said. “The main goal is to provide citizenship to her child," Home Minister Lekhak said, “This has not only established the rights of mothers/women. It is also aimed at fully establishing women's rights within the boundaries of the constitution. The rights of children have also been protected.”
