PM Oli returns home from Turkmenistan

Kathmandu, August 9: Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli returned home Friday midnight after attending the 3rd United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) in Turkmenistan.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Urban Development Prakashman Singh, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Badri Prasad Pandey received the PM at the VVIP Lounge of Tribhuvan International Airport.

On the occasion, the Chief Secretary to the Government of Nepal, the Chief of Army Staff, the heads of security agencies, and high-ranking officials of the Government of Nepal were also present.

The Nepal Army presented a guard of honor on the PM.

PM Oli had left for the summit at the formal invitation of Turkmenistan President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The conference was held in the city of Avaza, Turkmenistan, from August 5 to 8.

Oli addressed the Conference as the Chairman of the Global Coordination Bureau of Least Developed Countries.

During the conference, he co-chaired a high-level roundtable as well as addressed various other events.

Thirty-two developing countries from Asia, Europe, Africa and South America participated in the conference.

The conference discussed the lack of direct territorial access to the sea, the problems faced by landlocked countries and the benefits that can be derived from the global market.

In view of the fact that international trade of those countries has to rely on transit through other countries, the conference focused on enhancing the competitiveness of landlocked developing countries due to additional border crossings and long distances from major markets, cumbersome transit procedures and inadequate infrastructure, as well as a significant increase in the total cost of transportation and other transactions.

Prime Minister Oli, on the sidelines of the Conference, held meetings with the heads of delegations of different countries and high officials of the United Nations and other international organizations.

Without direct territorial access to the sea, landlocked developing countries face challenges to international trade, connectivity and economic development.

It is believed that the conference will be fruitful in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in the absence of direct access, not being able to benefit significantly from the global market, not having a global comfortable network of transport and difficult to develop food infrastructure.

The summit aims to enhance investment, including in strategic partnerships, to address the challenges faced by member states and help them realize their full potential.

Thus, the role of the conference has become to build an equal and prosperous future by cooperating with these countries.

The high-level delegation led by the PM included Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Amrit Bahadur Rai, First Lady Radhika Shakya, Chief Adviser to the Prime Minister Bishnu Prasad Rimal, Member of Parliament Surya Bahadur Thapa Kshetri, Principal Private Secretary to the Prime Minister Rajesh Bajracharya, Personal Physician Professor Dr. Shah was accompanied by senior government officials, media persons and security personnel.
