Kathmandu, Aug 2: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli stated that Nepal’s ties with China have grown stronger over the years, grounded in mutual understanding and close people-to-people bonds. Speaking at a ceremony in Kathmandu marking 70 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations, Oli emphasized that this partnership is rooted in shared history, cultural familiarity, and civilizational values.
Highlighting the foundation of the relationship, he noted that Nepal and China continue to uphold the five principles of peaceful coexistence, supported by deep trust and respect. He reiterated Nepal’s unwavering support for the One China Policy, while acknowledging China’s consistent recognition of Nepal’s sovereignty and independence. “China is not only our neighbour,” Oli said, “but also a trusted partner in development.”
Reflecting on key moments in bilateral ties, Oli pointed to Chinese President Xi Jinping’s 2019 visit to Nepal as a defining event that strengthened the relationship and laid the groundwork for strategic cooperation. He also mentioned his own recent visit to China in 2024, which included meetings with top Chinese leaders. Oli described the visit as meaningful, especially with the signing of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) framework, which, according to him, reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment to deeper collaboration.
He expressed appreciation for China’s support in improving Nepal’s physical infrastructure and connectivity. In addition to that, Oli mentioned that cooperation between the two countries continues to grow in several areas—including agriculture, trade, transit, health, energy, digital innovation, and climate adaptation.
Addressing recent environmental challenges, he cited the destructive flash flood in the Lhende stream near the Nepal-China border as a reminder of the need for stronger joint efforts. He stressed the importance of collaboration in disaster preparedness, data-sharing, and sustainable development, especially in the ecologically sensitive Himalayan region.
Oli also praised China’s development journey—highlighting its success in poverty reduction, technological progress, and contributions to global sustainability. These accomplishments, he said, have not only transformed China but also played a role in promoting international stability.
The Prime Minister said Nepal looks to China’s achievements as a source of motivation. He added that Nepal is pursuing its own national vision under the goal of “Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali” with renewed confidence and optimism.
